Shaping the Future of Our Canadian Skies - Increasing the Participation of Women in the Aviation and Aerospace Industry

The Canadian Council for Aviation & Aerospace (CCAA) is pleased to invite you to meet with other stakeholders as part of a national conversation about increasing women’s participation in the aviation and aerospace sector in Canada. With the looming labour shortage in key occupations such as pilots and aircraft mechanics, our industry needs to take action on several fronts. In particular,  we need a meaningful strategy to ensure we can access highly skilled and trained talent from under tapped and/or underrepresented groups.

In March 2018, the CCAA Labour Market Information Report confirmed that the industry continues to have very few women in those positions where we see shortages on the horizon – only 6% of mechanics and 7% of pilots are women. These results show an important opportunity.

Two fruitful sessions in October 2018 showed a widespread consensus on the importance of workforce development initiatives in our industry. (The sessions were Transport Canada’s Aviation Summit and CCAA’s Labour Market Strategy Day). In particular,  one of the breakout sessions at the CCAA meeting focused on the challenges to the recruitment and retention of women in our industry. This generated much interest and was a great start -- now we are inviting you and other stakeholders to validate these findings and move the conversation forward.

We encourage you to pass this invitation to a colleague, educator, labour leader or other industry-related stakeholder who has an interest in the topic. We also encourage you to invite employees who are in these target occupations (pilots or maintenance / manufacturing) to participate and contribute their ideas.  We welcome both men and women to the conversation.

This is your chance to provide input and learn about supportive practices for the advancement of women in aviation and aerospace and contribute to our industry’s National Action Plan of best practices and recommendations for stakeholders. We are also pleased to offer lunch to attendees.

We will be hosting the following focus group sessions in Ottawa and Toronto in March, and will be adding other sessions across Canada - as well as an important session about Pilots following the Air Transport Association of Canada's Spring Event in Ottawa in May (exact date and location for this Spring event to be confirmed).

Each event will consist of two distinct sessions: one relative to pilot occupations only and one relative to maintenance and manufacturing occupations. Please select the appropriate session or feel free to come to both.  While the event is FREE, space is limited and we encourage you to register using Eventbrite early.
